Brandon’s brother Shane, who’s 12 years older, heavily influenced Brandon’s music taste when Brandon was a child. The first bands that he listened to were The Cure, The Smiths, The Cars, New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, mostly British new-wave bands with a lot of synthesizers. That’s the reason why on Hot Fuss Brandon sings with an accent, although he didn’t even realize that until after it was brought to his attention because singing like that was natural to him. And then about at the end of 2005 Brandon was out driving and he heard a Springsteen song on the radio and he liked it so much he went straight to a music store and bought one of his albums. And that’s basically why Sam’s Town differs from Hot Fuss because Brandon had developed new American musical influences like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and he had never had that before. So he didn’t develop an appreciation for American music until he was 24.
